Russian Cyclist Can Spoil Cavendish’s Home Olympics

Russian sprint cyclist Denis Galimzyanov could spoil Mark Cavendish’s home Olympics, six-time Tour de France winner Erik Zabel has warned.
Galimzyanov is the lead sprinter for Russia’s Katusha team, where Zabel works as a consultant, and despite his finish of 11th in last year’s World Championship in Copenhagen, he has the potential to challenge for medals in London, Zabel told RIA Novosti.
“I always say to Dennis that he should think of victory, that anything is possible for him at the Olympics. Maybe Cavendish will make a mistake at the Games? That can happen to anyone,” said the 41-year-old German, who won every Tour de France green jersey between 1996 and 2001.

“If the Russians can ensure a good formation at the finish for their leader – yes, they can get involved in the fight with the Germans, British and Italians. So nothing’s impossible for Denis in this situation.”
Zabel joined Katusha as a consultant in October. “I am now concentrating on Denis above all because the Olympics are ahead,” he said.
“Russia has a total of three cyclists in the road race. We’re already working on plans, preparing, working on some individual points.”
Zabel added that Galimzyanov did not need much improvement to be a medal contender.
“The top ten at the World Championships are cyclists of the highest class and to get there, to be close to them in the results is good in its itself, but if you consider the density of the results, then the difference in the top 20 between the medalists and those outside the prizes is negligible.
“So for a young cyclist it was a good result. Denis has a chance for a medal at the Olympics even with exactly the same lineup of power in the race as there was in Copenhagen.”
Zabel said Russia has other medal hopes.
“I think Denis has great prospects, but it’s not just him. [Alexander] Porsev is an excellent guy – he’s not on the list of the leaders of world cycling now, but it seems to me he can become a real star,” Zabel said.
While 24-year-old Galimzyanov has yet to win a Grand Tour event, he had a strong 2011 season with victory in the Paris-Brussels race, the Tour of Beijing and the Three Days of De Panne.
Porsev, 25, only turned professional in 2011, but is seen as one of Russian cycling brightest prospects.

A new report coming out of Germany says that International Business Machines Corp. is planning to cut 8,000 jobs out of its 20,000-plus workforce in Germany, according to sources from the company’s management.
Hours after IBM Corporation purchased smartphone and tablet application developer Worklight Ltd. for reportedly between $50 and $60 million, a news media outlet in Germany is reporting that the technology company is planning to lay off 20,000 workers.
According to Handselblatt, management sources say that IBM is working on its medium to long-term efforts to restructure its workforce. At the present time, IBM maintains a workforce of 20,000 in Germany – 427,000 worldwide.
“We constantly focus on innovation and competition. Transformation is part of our business model and our workforce adapts accordingly,” said Peter Gerdemann, a spokesman for IBM based in Ehningen, Germany. “Given the competitive nature of our business, we don’t openly discuss the details of plans.”
Bert Stach, a representative of the labor union Ver.di, who is in negotiations with IBM, told Bloomberg News that he thinks the company will not conduct mass layoffs but rather offer severance packages to its employees.
“In Germany, if you’re doing mass layoffs you have to go through negotiations with unions, and I think IBM will do anything to avoid that.” He added that it’s pure speculation as to how many will lose their jobs.

American Airlines may cut up to 15,000 jobs, or about 10 percent of its workforce, in an effort to cut costs at the struggling carrier, sources familiar with the situation told an NBC affiliate.
NBC 5 reported Wednesday that the airline’s parent company, AMR Corp., would announce the job cuts during a meeting Wednesday in Fort Worth. AMR has been operating under bankruptcy protection since November and is in negotiations with its unions over cost-cutting measures.

Bloomberg, citing industry analysts, also reported that American was preparing to offer contracts that would eliminate 10,000 to 15,00 jobs and freeze pensions.
American employes about 74,000 full- and part-time workers plus 14,000 at regional carrier American Eagle, Bloomberg said.
AMR reported a loss of $904 million in December alone.

Cancer charity halts grants to Planned Parenthood :: WRAL.com

NEW YORK — The nation’s leading breast-cancer charity, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, is halting its partnerships with Planned Parenthood affiliates — creating a bitter rift, linked to the abortion debate, between two iconic organizations that have assisted millions of women.

The change will mean a cutoff of hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants, mainly for breast exams.

Planned Parenthood says the move results from Komen bowing to pressure from anti-abortion activists. Komen says the key reason is that Planned Parenthood is under investigation in Congress — a probe launched by a conservative Republican who was urged to act by anti-abortion groups.

The rupture, which has not been publicly announced as it unfolded, is wrenching for some of those who’ve learned about it and admire both organizations.

“We’re kind of reeling,” said Patrick Hurd, who is CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Virginia — recipient of a 2010 grant from Komen — and whose wife, Betsi, is a veteran of several Komen fundraising races and is currently battling breast cancer.

“It sounds almost trite, going through this with Betsi, but cancer doesn’t care if you’re pro-choice, anti-choice, progressive, conservative,” Hurd said. “Victims of cancer could care less about people’s politics.”

Planned Parenthood said the Komen grants totaled roughly $680,000 last year and $580,000 the year before, going to at least 19 of its affiliates for breast-cancer screening and other breast-health services.

Komen spokeswoman Leslie Aun said the cutoff results from the charity’s newly adopted criteria barring grants to organizations that are under investigation by local, state or federal authorities. According to Komen, this applies to Planned Parenthood because it’s the focus of an inquiry launched by Rep. Cliff Stearns, R-Fla., seeking to determine whether public money was improperly spent on abortions.

Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, has depicted Stearns’ probe as politically motivated and said she was dismayed that it had contributed to Komen’s decision to halt the grants to PPFA affiliates.

“It’s hard to understand how an organization with whom we share a mission of saving women’s lives could have bowed to this kind of bullying,” Richards told The Associated Press. “It’s really hurtful.”

Reaction to the news was swift and passionate. On Twitter, it was one of the most discussed topics Tuesday evening, with some tweets praising Komen’s decision and others angrily vowing never to give to it again.

Two Democrats in Congress — Sen. Patty Murray of Washington and Rep. Michael Honda of California — issued statements denouncing Komen’s action.

“I am stunned and saddened,” said Honda, whose longtime chief of staff, Jennifer VanderHeide, had breast cancer last year. “I call on Komen to reconsider this decision, stand strong in the face of political pressure and do the right thing for the health of millions of women everywhere.”

Anti-abortion groups, in contrast, welcomed the news. The Alliance Defense Fund praised Komen “for seeing the contradiction between its lifesaving work and its relationship with an abortionist that has ended millions of lives.”

Birth control pill recall amid pregnancy fear

Pfizer said on Tuesday it was recalling about a million packets of birth control pills in the United States because they may not contain enough contraceptive to prevent pregnancy.
“As a result of this packaging error, the daily regimen for these oral contraceptives may be incorrect and could leave women without adequate contraception, and at risk for unintended pregnancy,” according to a Pfizer statement on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website.
Pfizer found that some packets of the drugs had too many active tablets, while others had too few.

Oral birth control products use a series of 21 drug tablets and 7 inactive sugar tablets to regulate the menstrual period while providing contraception.
The birth control pills posed no health threat to women, Pfizer said, but it urged consumers affected by the recall to “begin using a non-hormonal form of contraception immediately.”
The drugmaker said the issue involved 14 lots of Lo/Ovral-28 tablets and 14 lots of Norgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol tablets.
